Gear? 3.54 to 3.73
Is it worth the trouble to go from 3.54 to 3.73 Only running 31" tires. I have a parts jeep that has 3.73 and my future drive ( will be on the road next week) has 3.54 gears. i know fronts are the same dana 35 or 30 dont remember right now I know i would need to buy gears for the rear dana 44. i also dont remember if i can run 3.73 on 3.53 carrier.

Looks like we will keep the 3.54 gears for now. I have other stuff i would rather spend the money on. Thanks

Buddy I've run 3.73's on 31s, 32s and 34s. Now I run 4.10s on 34s and 31s (street tires) and lemme tell ya I wish I had 33 street tires.
4.10s and 31s means lots of snap off the line and pulling power but a LOW top end.. if you are dead set on running 31s your whole life get the 373s but don't expect it to be easy to find unless you are buying aftermarket.
And I agree, I wouldn't spend $500 to go from 355 to 373 either.. i'd probably just wait till I found the axles I wanted already geared or something... or get 32/33's and run 4.10s.
D44 carrier break is 373 and up and 355 down
PS my statements are based on experience with an AW4

Dana 30 is 3.73 & up and 3.55 & down
Model 35 is 3.55 & up and 3.21 & down
Ford - no carrier break
Chrysler 8 25 - no carrier break that we need to worry about (2.73 & up)

I agree with this. I run 4.56 with 33" tires. I ran stock gears with 31's for a little while but after a while offroading, I could tell I needed more power.

My MJ wasn't geared low enough offroad with 4.10's and 31's imo, but was good on the road, with a 4.0 and AX-15.
I wouldn't hesitate to run 4.10's and 31's, auto or manual. Not worth the trouble to only go to a 3.73 though, I'd never spend the time and money to only go one ratio lower.

Sorry I was wrong about the d44 carrier break, I was thinking about d30.
I say low top end because the 4 l does its best work at 2 k rpm.. To hit 100 mph you would have to be rocking at least 3 k I would suspect
Its not terrible though, its what I do every day. Its really nice in the city!

So i should keep the Dana 30 front out of the parts jeep. I was about ready to send it to the scrap yard. Its running 3.73 so going up or should i say lower to 4.10 should just require a R&P and install kit. Then just keep my eyes open for a rear Dana 44 with the gears i am looking for.

In my opinion the d30 is a good axle, xj one is high pin too.. Good to 35s or so. I've seen guys run 38s and 36s without breaking but I wouldn't recommend it. Putting chromos in etc starts to cost lots of money and isn't as good as a d44 up front for the same or similar cost.
