Skid plate preference
Which gas tank skids for a 97 xj bolt onto the unibody ?
im looking aftermarket and under 250 or so. i have found rustys, jcr, skid row, pure jeeps that bolt onto the unibody. Are there others?
i already googled looking more for personal experiences and what products arent worth the money.
thanks

It is plenty tough- bolts to the tank hanger bolts in the front and the rear cross member at the back. I think youll be happy with it.
I personally just use the metal stock one that came with mine- has a few small dents but I am high enough that it does not hit on much.

Sorry for reviving old thread. Do you have a hitch also?
The Tomken arrived and did not fit. It actually dented the gas tank a bit after attempted install. Being the great people they are, 4wdp gave a prompt refund. I find this odd because I have only read good things about tomken.

The gas tanks, and consequently the skid plates, on the '84-96 XJs are different that those on the 97-01s. The earlier tanks were steel and a little more...streamlined than the later, plastic ones.
You need either the proper OEM skid or one off of a Grand CHerokee (they are shaped differently at the rear to accomodate the different shape).
Or, you could modify a pre-97 skid to fit. You just need to cut a couple of welds and then have at it with a hammer. (This is what I did since I had a pre-97 skid available).
Or, you can go aftermarket but you have to make sure you get the right one.

That people have said good thing about tomken? I searched for awhile and a lot of folks like the skid. Mine however was not the proper fit, possibly due to my hangers being too short. Not super sure.

Ive liked every tomken product I have ever purchased. Like I said, they were one of the few making decent parts when my first one was built.
irrelevant of course as it didn't fit the OPs haha

After talking to them on the phone, we decided maybe the bolts that hold my gas tank on were too short. They offered to send now longer ones free of charge, but I decided to just get a skid that mounts to the unibody instead. The product was pretty nice and the customer service from tomken was top notch. I just decided to go another direction because I didn't want to go through the process of changing the bolts out and then mounting the skid.
Again product and customer service was great.
