The reason I started this thread is not to complain about my xj I love it and will never stop driving it. I'm just trying to get the most out of it. People are getting so worked up over this it's ridiculous. I just figured there's some guys out there that have adjusted a few things to add a couple miles that's all.

Yeah you can adjust a little bit here and there to help. But honestly outside routine maintenance its not worth your time or money.

That link above wasnt posted for you btw, it was posted for others.

Yes, I'm one of those people

I know my XJ isn't going to get great fuel economy but doing a few things can help me save a few dollars and I have found the best things don't cost anything to do.

Funny thing about improvements on something that gets low fuel economy to begin with it doesn't take much to get a massive improvement. If you get 10 MPG and after a driver mod get 12 MPG that is a 20% increase! If you had a car that got 30 MPG then after a driver mod get 32 MPG that is only an increase of 6.3%

I have said before I am one that actually bought a second vehicle for fuel economy. I push it to get 30 MPG which is TWICE the fuel economy I would get in my Jeep. Though after registration and insurance I am only saving about $15 or $20 per month. I average about 900 miles per month.

Makes a bigger difference when you drive farther and actually have to pay for gas. What you guys "pay" down there in the US would be like winning the lottery for a Canadian. Its at 4.60/gallon right now and people are like "wow gas prices are so low right now, better fill up"

So help me understand what that has to do with saving money for fuel in the USA?

I get it. The more you drive and the more you pay for fuel the more money you save by having a second more fuel efficient vehicle. However There is a point that buying, maintaining, insuring and registering a second vehicle doesn't make sense. This is more than likely the case for the OP.

I made a thread about the cost of saving fuel a while ago. Everybody's situation is different. You might save money or you might not. You could be stepping over dollars to pick up dimes...then again you could legitimately save a lot of money.

Here is the thread.

Absolutely. The costs and benefits vary widely for everyone. OttawaXJ's analysis is a specific situation, but his point is that it is worth considering as an option. JP Magazine did an article on this a couple months back that was had totally different expectations (quite ridiculous in my opinion) based on $10k car over 3 years that couldn't even get 30 MPG, so it's important to keep things realistic. Several thousand bucks a year is pretty significant - a few hundred a year is STILL savings (plus you get a ride to the parts store when you break something critical).

It's a 2000 with about 70k miles. Previous owners bought it because they had a cabin in big bear and wanted a 4x4 to get to it but It just ending up sitting in their drive way, I've put about 20k on the past 2 years I've had it manly because I drive it up to the high sierras every year
Do you pass smog in ca?

Everyones situation is different. However most people agree, its nice to wheel the XJ on sunday and not worry about how to get to work on monday.
