Default Full Width Rear....D30 front...

i have a hook up on a full width 9 inch but just paid a lot of money to rebuild my D30 (4.56 - BJ's - seals and bearing as well as a Riddler Diff cover.. and sum paint). I am some what considering the full rear and using 2" spacers for the front.... is this just cRazYy??? he may also have a LP 9 inch out of a crown vic as well which is much closer to stock width I believe. currently have RE 4.5 lift with 33's FWIW.

The full width should be a good 6" wider than your stock rear and would look pretty funny. The one out of crown vic is most likely a 8.8. There are narrow versions of the 9" that came in cars and rancheros that have the same 5x4.5 bolt pattern but they have weaker 28 spline shafts and they quit using them in the early 80s so plan on a full rebuild. It is narrower than your stock axle just like an 8.8 by about 1.5-2".

Why not just have an 8.25?

Yes. Crazy.

Full width and 33s isn't necessary.

yeah I was skeptical that is was a 9" and not an 8.8... I didn't realize they are 1.5-2" shorter like the 8.8 though
8.8 is good but not really worth it considering I have a 27 spline 8.25 and both are c-clip. I wasn't sure if the 8.25 was worth gearing but it is locked as well, I just don't like the c-clip... maybe do a disk break conversion. im going to look into this axle he says he has off of the crown vic.

its not for strength, I like the look and additional track width. fabrication time / cost is not a concern, will be done by myself and a friend.

don't mean to knock your point, I completely understand where you are coming from. I will likely stick with the 8.25 or maybe this elusive crown vic 9" I was told about. thanks guys.

Just gear the 8.25. You'll be fine. Bolt some 1.5 spacers on if you want the extra width. Make sure you lock tite them if you do though

for the full width 9", it is cheaper to buy 5x5.5 rims with high back space than it is to regear an 8.25. if you plan on putting in a D44 front some time next year I say go for it. real ford 9" axles should be 65", which is only 4" wider than stock. if you run 3.75 BS front and 5" BS rear it shouldn't be a problem. **** wheel spacers abandon that plan

also how much does he want for it? do whatever is cheapest. if gearing the 8.25 is the cheapest plan for the long term goal, do that.
wouldn't be the first time I've seen a 9 paired with a 30

2 different backspacing wheels? Lol so what backspace do you make your spare and how do you rotate your tires?

yes, I was told they are about 4" wider overall, that's what led me to the spacers in the first place. I would need to regear the new axle regardless so that is a wash and I am told the 9" is easier to do than the 8.25?? the full width will be between $200 and $250 and me and they guy selling them will be doing the gears and fab work to get them mounted. as I mentioned before, the fab time / cost wont be the concern, more if it is a silly idea or not. good to know I am not the first to think of this haha. yes, I agree that spacers are suspect but I get mixed review, as long as they are torqued, everything should be fine although they do add stress to the unit bearings. with that said, I would probably still go for the spacers. another issue is bolt pattern on the full, are they 4.5 like the D30?
