The majority on here will probably recommend full leaf packs. Like the previous poster says though, it really depends on you. If your XJ is a later model year with super low miles and the stock leaf springs are sitting like new, AAL may work fine. However, if you're like most of us and have a high mileage jeep with saggy leafs then get full packs. AAL on old springs will not hold up very long.

Just do your research before purchasing your lift. Some brands leafs are too short and give you bad shackle angle/ride. Others will give you more than the 4.5" you planned for.

They will...at first. But it probably won't last very long before they droop. Get full leaf packs.

When I bought my XJ, it had 2.5" lift which consisted of blocks and AAL in the rear. It was terrible! The ride was Incredibly stiff plus the factory leafs were tired and sagging. I quickly put a 4.5" lift with full leaf packs and the ride was much better. I was trying to save some money at the time and bought a slightly used Rusty's 4.5" short arm kit. After install I found that the actual ride height is 5.5" and the leaf packs are a little short and don't allow for a good shackle angle. It rides with about a 90* angle. It definitely rides better than it did with the AAL, but I'm slowly phasing out and replacing the Rusty's gear with better products. ...you get what you pay for.

Also, you may what to research bastard packs. I've never used them but some people swear by them for a decent ride and saving some pennies.

(For those sensitive people out there, I'm not bashing AAL. Just my personal experience/opinion.)

If you wanna build it right, get full leafs. New ones. If you don't really care just add a leaf. But if your springs are already saggy you won't get much lift.

FULL LEAFS!!! I just installed an add a leaf a few weeks ago and I now have RE 3.5" leafs being shipped to my house. you will not get the said amount of lift with add a leafs because your stock leafs are most likely shot. If you cant afford full leafs then make a bastard pack.

I used some aals initially as I saved $ for full packs...bent my original springs into an S shape within a week.
On a side note, I purchased OME "light duty" spring packs because my jeep is light weight and I'm keeping it that way, and I've experienced severe axle wrap because of it. Look for spring packs with more than 4 leafs...
