fuel pump wont stop running,need some info

fuel pump wont stop running,need some info
87 jeep cherokee pioneer.i changed my valve cover today and washed the bottom of the motor and the whole undercarrage and external of the jeep.after i was done i went back to the building,when i came back my fuel pump was running but the jeep was off and key was out of the ignition.what is causing the pump to continuously run?right now i have it unplugged at the rear of the jeep
