You don't need to drop the tank in early XJs, the pump is accessible from underneath the jeep. I changed the one in my 93 in a parking lot in 45 minutes.

This I understand. However I'm still curious to know the answer to my question.

There's two fuel tanks. 87-96 and 97-2001. 85 or 86 or whatever doesn't matter. Yes, what Sam did will work on all new body XJs.

Also, like said, I am aware that you can remove the fuel pump without dropping the tank.

I just wanted to know if your statement was aimed at all year XJs as is seemed so.

Whats the point of doing it on older XJ when you can get to it from underneath? If you did make an access door on older XJ, you still have to remove the sending unit from underneath the vehicle since it pulls straight forwards

Alright to put the confusion to rest ktm he is asking if the no support bar pertains to all year xj's. He might be redoing his floor.

there is a support bar. but the question was if it was in the way of cutting a fuel pump access door or not. Which it is not on the 97-01, and obviously not on the older xjs seeing that the fuel pump is on the front of the tank.
