I have a 2001 Sport, have owned it for about 7 months. My wife ran it dry one day and I still only managed to get a little more than 17 gallons in it. I thought these things were supposed to have 20 gallon tanks? The previous owner was the Montana Department of Transportation so I know it wasn't modified/changed in anyway. Thoughts?

XJs had different size tanks in them through the years. It also has to do with what engine you have and what trim level your XJ is.

The tank has a vent tube that won't let you put more than 17 gallons in it. I don't know why they did this. I did the fuel tank mod and got 26 gallons in it from a dry tank.

The only problem is, gasoline expands. If I fill it completly it will flow back out when it sits in the sun. I only fill it all the way when I'm travelling.

That seems odd to me. I'll have to check out that mod a little further. I need more capacity for sure. Right now I can maybe get about 320 miles on the highway and like 250 in town, that just doesn't cut it. What I don't get is that they list it as a 20 ga. tank, you can only get 17ga. because of the vent tube, but when you mod the vent tube you can get 25+ gallons?? WTF?? Why would Jeep set it up this way....makes no sense to me, I understand the expansion thing but really?!

Well that sucks.....I guess I have to save my pennies and buy an aftermarket tank. I would really like another solution that wasn't gonna cost me $1000. And I don't feel like carrying a bunch of jerry cans with me everywhere I go.

Would it be possible to swap out my tank for an older, metal one that I can do the vent mod on?? That would be cheaper than buying a lager, aftermarket tank.
