So I'm planning on putting in an sye, and after some research I've learned that you can use a stock front drive shaft for the new rear shaft. when doing this, are there any modifications that must be made to the shaft? Or is it a direct fit?

I had to use a zj front shaft because the xj one I used was a little on the short side. But my jeeps a little raked with about 5" in back and 3" front.

 

lots of factors, such as type of engine and transmission, type of SYE, type of rear axle, amount of lift, etc. On my 4.0 AW4 with a hack and tap SYE and and 8.25 axle and about 5" of lift, I am barely able to use a matching front driveshaft. With a regular SYE the driveshaft would be too short and I would need to use a ZJ or WJ shaft.

 

well it's I6 2000 Cherokee, np231 with a d35 rear (sadly)

 

3 inch rough country lift until I add spacers and shackles to net about 5 inches of lift

 

Just measure the distance and find out. I have an aw4, 231, AA sye, Chrysler 8.25 and approximately 5" in the rear and I felt more comfortable using the longer zj shaft. I think I'm my thread about this there is a chart showing the lengths of different driveshafts for different years so you can measure and decide what you need.

 

what trans? Both the trans and rear axle dictate the length you need for the driveshaft. As well as the type of SYE.

 

Why not just swap an 8.25 or something while you're at it? Covert it to disc brakes and drop it in.

How about an AW4, np231 and 8.25 rear, 4.5" lift?

 

I checked out buying another front shaft and then rebuilding it with new larger joints and by the time it was finished it was so close to a new one from a vendor on eBay custom made for an XJ Dave's Driveshaft $199 I just bought it instead.

 

Yeah I'm thinking about just spending the extra buck and buying a new cv rear shaft
