Hey all. Quick question. What thickness do I need for a D-Ring mount. Most I am seeing are .750" or 1". Will 1/2" work?

Background

I am fabbing up my own steering frame plate, and D-Ring mounts on my 99 since I currently have no recovery at the front.

I am using 1/4" plate, like all of the aftermarket bumper-to-frame tie ins. Only, in my case, I am doubling up the plate, and welding it all around, to essentially have a 1/2" plate there.

This will be bolted to the 3 bumper supports, and then again through the steering box. While at it, I am fabbing a steel spacer for the inside.

I want to extend the frame plating out through the stock bumper, and drill a large hole for a D-Ring. I was thinking maybe it wouldn't be enough, but I realize that all of the larger D-Ring mounts are welded/bolted to the bumpers, which are only held on by the one plate on each side anyway... 1/2".

Thoughts?

 

Why not try and fab a ft. bumper yourself a simple one with the mounts on it and reinforced there are a lot of them on this site to look at. Then you could do away with the stock bumper and have a heaver one made the way you want.

 

I hear you, and I've looked at a LOT of bumpers... That's why I know they all use 1/4 inch to mount them.

Issue is that I really like the way the stock cherokee looks (when beefed up a bit) so I don't want to change that. My rear hitch is already hidden (mostly) inside my stock rear bumper skin.

Maybe, if my bumper gets wrecked off road, ill have a good reason to fully fabricate a bumper, and if so, these 1/2" frame tie ins will be a great start.

Question remains, is 1/2 frame tie in good to pull on?

 

Or a lot of places offer diy bumper kits that you weld up yourself.

 

You had to cut a hole in the bumper to mount a hitch?
Is this some kind of DIY thing?

 

Chose to.

Hitch is installed in the frame, instead of under. Raising my clearance and departure, without giving up function. Also now I would use it for recovery, where my last one was too small. Click my photos to see more details

Yeah, DIY. I bought this jeep to try and modify it tastefully, but by doing as much as I can, on my own. Learning project.

As for my question here, I've read lots more and am confident with the 1/2" plates for recovery. I'll post up a pic when its done.
