Well first off what's wrong with your axle? Then what gear ratio do you have? You can find this by dividing the number of ring gear teeth by the number of pinion gear teeth, but if your lucky the tag will still be on the back axle! Then go to the local jy & find one with the same ratio, preferably an older XJ with the low pinion.

I got in an accident and my axle was bent. So I need a new one, and my gear ratio is 3.55 is that all I need to worry about is having the same gearing or is there more to it?

It depends on if you are wanting to buy the brake assembly with the new axle. Yes any Cherokee axle will mount up to any year body granted you match your 3.55 ratio, but if say you went with an older low pinion (stronger) Cherokee axle. Your brakes wouldn't mount up to it. You would want to either buy a complete rotor to rotor low pinion axle or a 2000-2001 high pinion axle (weaker for hard off road) that you could put your bent axles brakes on. Make since? also would need an abs axle if you have abs

I will jump onto this one - are all HP D30 axle housings the same aside for disco vs non-disco?
ie: is a 98 non-disco HP housing the same as a 92 non-disco HP housing?
I am not asking about carriers/gears, axles, knuckles, etc - just the housings themselves.

1984-99: High pinion.
2000-01: Low pinion.
Buy a high pinion axle and call it an upgrade.

I already have one - I'm looking for a second housing for a winter project build so mine doesn't have to come out until the new one is ready to go back in.
I agree that the OP should look for a HP with the 3.55s since he has to buy an axle anyway. Doesn't make sense to replace with a LP D30.
