ford 9 inch shaved housing
I'm going to be shaving the housing of a Ford 9 inch axle housing. I found a site where the guy shaves off 1 1/4 inches. Is that the max that can be taken off safely? I have spent the last few days searching the internet and have only found the one site. Does anyone have knowledge or first hand experience with this. I may just go one inch to be safe. Don't know yet though

The 9" uses a stamped steel housing verses the cast housing of Dana axles. The steel isn't thick enough to shave, you'd have to cut out a section and weld in a new one. Unless you are talking about the third member and then I'd say don't because if it's stock you need all the strength you can get and you'll be dragging the housing long before the chunk.

It does once you rotate the housing up for pinion angle.
This is what I'm talking about:

It's actually one of the easier housings to shave. I'm just curious how much I can take off without interfering with the ring gear

Did you read what it says under it. Not to run it on the street because the lack of oil will make the gears overheat. I run an unshaved 60, which is a bit bigger, and I can count the times I've hit it on one hand and I mostly run rocks. It's all about tire placement.

LOL! I actually just read that 2 seconds ago. Your D60 is alot beefier than the 9 inch. Should have gotten a FF D60 or 14bolt but I got the 9 inch for free.
I may end up taking a half inch still just so I can put some 1/4 plate to strengthen it up, cause its not the thickest metal.

Prob wouldn't hurt and free is always good. I was planning on using a 9" and still have one in the back yard that is 8.8 width but got a deal on the front 44 and wanted full widths. The 9" can be built to handle 40s and fairly cheaply too. Guys who run drag cars swap gears all the time and you can pick up a decent set for next to nothing. You can also put crown vic disc on them I'm told.
