Default figuring out my gearing dilemma

in the future: 91-96 I6 HO 5 speed 5.5 long arm 33's reverse cut HP D30 front D44 rear with eaton elocks.

I've been told that 4.10 gears would do about stock mileage/power with the ax15 trans. any disputes?
Is 4.10 the right choice? dont plan on going bigger than 33. what difference would it make to go taller and get 4.56

also, what brand for quality and price? can I do junk yard ring and pinion?

4.10's on a manual = about 4.56 on an automatic, so 4.10's would do you better than stock. 4.56's would make it a torque monster.

At 65 mph the AX15 manual with 3.07s and 33s will be turning about 1605 rpms.
With 225x75 r15s the rpms would be 1871 rpms
An AX15 with 4.10 gears and 33s at 65 mph will be turning about 2143 rpms which will be much better than the crappy 3.07s, with 4.56s you would be turning 2384 which would give you more power and probably almost as good mileage if not as good mileage.

so what would you recommend for a novice who values gas mileage over power? (for now)
4.10 or 4.56
becuase as much of that information you dropped that I understand, you didnt really take a stand on either side.

Want gas mileage? Go for the 4.10's cause i wish i did. I rock 3.55's, ax15 and 33' BFG KM1's and get 16-19 mpg. You can find 4cly axles with 4.10's

I've never had a 4x4 that I valued mileage over 4x4 function. If I was looking at mileage as the main objective I would buy something that got really good mileage as in a little economy car or at least keep my Cherokee as stock as possible.

The lift and 33s will not help mileage, but driving easy I got 13.2 mpg when I drove 82 miles on the pavement with 20 psi in my 35x12.5 r15 KMs and 41 miles mostly in 4x4 on the trails with 8 psi in 1-2 1/2 ft. of snow running 4.88s. As they say mileage will vary, but if you want mileage don't lift it and install taller tires.

Maybe some want a duel purpose vehicle, decent on long trips and can still wheel. A crawl box or doubler would be perfect for that

yeah people say get a different car a lot.
but I've been told you can keep it almost stock if you get the right gears on your setup.
just trying to find out if thats a myth or not.
I think I'll go with the 4.10s

I wanted to pull gears at first. but I got advice about spending your money on good gears and having it be worth it.
bad gears can mess up your lockers I guess?

Crawl box - edit this is for JK's, not XJ's. My bad

Currently No. I have about 6 months left of college and my full time job is 700 miles from school and home so between school terms very little gets done. I've been collecting for some time and when I get the time/more money, 1 tons and a 231/231 doubler is going into my DD. So I'm waiting to do it all in one shot so I can DD an XJ on 40's
