OP, the axle info thread is a good read. You need to determine tire size, lockers, and gearing before you pick an axle. D30s can be built pretty tough. Not everyone needs Rockwells.

Wrong. "Some" D44s are full width with locking hubs but they also came in Early Broncos and Waggys and are almost the same width as an XJ. Not to mention the Jeep narrow and wide track which are categories all their own. Some Waggy versions and most Dodge versions didn't come with locking hubs and the newer Dodge versions have unit bearings. Ford, Dodge, GM, IH, Jeep/AMC and I'm sure I'm missing some, all used a version of the D44 up front at one point or another and the can be had from as narrow as around 58" wms to wms to 69" wms to wms. 5, 6, and 8 lug too.
