Do you have the cursory "Visual World Peace", "Save the whales", "Audobon Society", "Co-exist", and "Bernie" bumper stickers on your Subaru?
Wrong model. Mine's the one on the left, the illegitimate offspring of Toyota and Subaru. The one on the right is the Scion bastard half sister I found parked next to mine when I came out of the store one day.
We don't put hipster bumper stickers on our cars, only speed shop stickers that add +25hp.

Three years in, it still puts a smile on my face. I learned to drive in MGs and Triumphs. This car has all the advantages of those cars without many of the drawbacks. I would have had to spend twice as much for another car that handles as well.
The XJ and the Subaru are perfect complements to each other. Despite how different they are, they're surprisingly similar in that they're both designed with the driver in mind. If I drive one too much, I start itching to drive the other.
That's what I hate about most newer cars they all look alike I guess.
I have always been one to match exhaust to HP under the hood and use dyno to check them, but try to use the quietest one that will me the closest to max HP. I followed the old school way keep it quiet and close to stock looking make the other guy feel safe when he betting his money.

Those look alike because they are almost the exact same car underneath, with slightly different suspension tweaks and a different front bumper cover and badges. They're made in the same factory, and the parts are all interchangeable. The Subaru BRZ and the Scion FRS (now the Toyota 86 with Scion's demise) are frequently referred to as "the Twins" because they have the same DNA.

Plymouth Laser/Eagle talon/Mitsubishi Eclipse. Same deal.
Had a muffler shop install a FlowMaster Super 50, the only quiter one that would fit with the existing cat and tail pipe. Just loud enough over stock but not too loud. The drone at hi-way speeds was surprisingly tolerable.
To me, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to dump a bunch of money into a stock motor's exhaust, to make it sound "not stock".
I agree with the rest of what you said regarding it not being a performance engine, but I feel that is irrelevant to exhaust sound choice. Do you think that the sound of the exhaust should somehow accurately represent the performance of the engine? For me and many it is much simpler than that. Exhaust sound is just one more cosmetic thing completely independent of performance.
If you want to set a rule for yourself that dictates how certain vehicles are allowed to sound, that's your style. The way I see it, that's like saying a car can't be a certain color or have stripes unless it meets a certain performance threshold. I'm not judging you at all for following your rule, but recognize that it's just your personal guideline and that no one else is following it as if it's law. Some guys just want a particular sound for no better reason than for that to be the sound that they hear.
At the risk of being called a cheap Jeep person again, I do agree that sound itself is not worth a ton of money, and anyone who spends more than they need to just for sound....well, "a fool and his money are soon parted."

I was completely agreeing with what you were saying until this. You can say that about a lot of things. Paint jobs, rims, interior, performance items. Who can say what someone "needs" to spend on something? If sound or anything else is important to you, then have at it. Get your desired results.

When I wrote that, I was envisioning a scenario where someone wants "sound X" where "sound X" can be had for $100 but instead, either because they buy a product from a more expensive company or buy more stuff than necessary to achieve their goal, they spend $200.
I mean, if "sound X" costs $100 and someone really wants "sound Z" which costs $900 instead, I might have an opinion about their choice, but I'm not going to judge them--they wanted "sound Z" after all, and they paid what they had to.

Ah ok. I had the scenario of product A was cheaper and had better gains then B, but B was the sound wanted so the coin was spent on the "lesser" product. Haha even though I knew in my head the discussion was on sound I still was thinking performance as well for some reason. But yeah some people want " the name". That's cool too I won't judge. It's like people and snap on tools. They are good but are they THAT good.

By all means, if someone wants a deeper, throatier exhaust, go for it.
It's gets to a point though, where it still makes me laugh, as it's no different than a Honda ricer putting a fart can sized pipe on his Civic and sounding like a pissed off weed whacker.
Same goes for guys wanting to seemingly sound like a V8...guess what, it's not.
To each his own by all means, but it falls in the same line to me as those who paint every other accessory, steering, diff covers, etc. colors like neon green.

There's tasteful...then there's attention *****.
See you are like everyone of us. You only like things if its a style you like. Same with me and everyone on here. Whats tasteful to you is not the same as everyone else. If i want my jeep to sound like a v8 gosh darn it its gonna sound like a v8 haha. Its all part of modding and customization. The people that paint everything a certain color. To me that shows tremendous pride to take the time to do that. Not mine or your favorite color? Oh well we'll get over it its not ours haha. Im sure there are ricers or whomever that don't like what i've done. Its ok everyone has a style. I see crazy paint jobs all over my city. Its just self expression. I probably got laughed at by many because of my old jeep that was lifted and all the off-road accessories. Oh well its my hobby. Just like ricers, or muscle car enthusiasts, or model train builders, or coin collectors. Everyone has a hobby, and not many are the same haha. Like 5 years ago in a neighboring city, there was a shootout between 2 different vehicle clubs. Freaking crazy man haha all because they would make fun of each other. Resorted to freaking guns man like children.
