That seems strange, take some pictures and post them. That's pretty interesting.

Yep. 3 cats for you. Kinda sucks but nothing you can do. They are stuck there for life.

Maybe so in California. Where I'm from, I'm free to run with no cats. Only a muffler is required.

There are headers for the 2000 and 2001

Well that third cat is like a secondary cat and the ones under the manifold are the primary ones?

This is not true. Under federal law you are required to have a catalytic converter if the vehicle was equipped with one from factory.

Yes, you have three cats. The two on the manifold are often called "pre-cats." I would consider the downstream cat the primary one but you cannot remove the upstream ones. Its all in an effort to control emissions. Just another downside of the 00-01 XJ's.

Lets leave it at yes, you have 3 cats, this is normal and you cannot remove them. ZERO discussion about removing federal emission components otherwise this thread is going to get locked.

Its not, it is a cali jeep with the 2 pre cats and the big cat at the muffler. Federal law i believe has 1 cat as standard so you can remove those 2 cats and just get the bypass kits. Read up on it. People here cry hard about muffler stuff though so tread softly?

Cherokee Forum Rule #5

Illegal Activity
5. Do not talk about illegal activity on this forum. This includes illegal drugs, parties, wheeling, internet use, etc. Violators of this rule will be dealt with on a case by case basis. This rule includes the discussion of removing catalytic convertors and emissions equipment , this is illegal and not allowed to be discussed on this site.

Anyone else want to step-up to the plate?

There is no "treading softly" here. No discussion of removing catalytic converters.

Okay, all. Here's the skinny.

The site staff is currently taking portions of that rule into consideration. Once a decision has been made, the rules will be amended to reflect said decision. I will leave this thread open for now, and will update here once the decision has been made.

Stay tuned, the decision will be made after this weekend...trying to give all the site staff time for their input on the matter.

Boy, certain people here are uptight about catalytic converters. It's very odd, considering this forum is also about completely offroad racing or wheeling jeeps, not just street machines. It IS perfectly legal to remove the catalytic converter from a non registered off road only vehicle. There are a lot of people who trailer their XJ to where ever they are going to play with it.

It's funny, I have a diesel truck also, and on every forum, just about every other thread is about removing emissions equipment. Cats, EGRs, computer tunes, and more. In no way can the forum staff/owner/administrator be held responsible legally.

Sort of true......I'd say 1 in 10 do that...the rest of us drive them on the roads & streets to get anywhere.

So, even with your completely guessed 1 in 10 number...

There are 123,043 members here. If only 1 in 10 have an offroad only vehicle, that leaves 12,304 members who LEGALLY do not need a catalytic converter.

Also there are members here from other countries. Other countries do not require catalytic converters the same as the US. Believe it or not, export model XJs up to a certain year didn't come with a catalytic converter from the factory! XJs are a very popular vehicle around the world.

so glad I learned math, makes me look smart
