i have been having some issues with my 89 xj the altanator when out on it a few weeks ago so i replaced it with a 100 amp everything was the same just more ampridge but now when im trying to engage the winch as soon as i hit the in switch the jeep boggs down and dies befor anyload is even on the winch i took my battery and got it tested and tested my altanator they are both good im thinkin maybe a short or somthin with the new bigger altanator have any of yall ran into a issue like this

 

Sounds like a ground issue if the battery and alt are both working properly. The added amperage draw from the winch is dropping the voltage to a point that the engine can no longer run, just like turning the switch off.

 

yea hats what im thinkin it left me stranded out in the middle of no were new years eve with no one that could get to me so i had to walk 3 miles to the road for my buddy to take me home and get a boost pack and ride my atv back it made for a long night

 

You need to check it under load... Get a volt meter and measure the voltage at the batter with it running. Tell us what that number is.

Then test it while attempting to use the winch (See what the voltage drops to as soon as you push the button)

Then test it after its cut off.

How did you wire up the winch? Directly to the battery with both wires?

 

yea its right off the battery i was gona ground it to the bumper but got in a hurry and just ran it to the battery it was workin fine till i replaced the altanator ill get some reading this weekend when i get back home i work all week for the national guard away from home so only getta mess with it on the weekends

 

i did check it while it was running and my reading was 14.6 thats the only reading i rmeber right off the top of my head

 

do u think it would be better to relocate the ground instead of being hooked directly to the battery

 

Got this issue fixed finaly found the time to check it out the new altanator i put on was bad so i swaped it and good to go now
