That's a PROM chip. Not a splice-in "performance module". The PROM contains all the fuel maps, timing curves, shift points, and other specs from the computer.

Now I'm intriqued. I'm wanting to skip the chip since I've heard they were a waste of money as well, but what about Superchips Flashpaq Programmer?

http://www.quadratec.com/products/17609_5000.htm

This seems like it would do all it says since it's virtually reprogramming the computer, but again, I don't know. Does something like this work better?

I only know one person that tried to run one on his xj and between him not being able to figure it out or maybe it not really working he sold it.

Some chips work on some cars. There will still be no real benefit to the 4.0 Jeep motor.

Whats a stage 1 chip?

How did you know there was a difference? Just feel?

Do you think it could have been your mind wanting to feel the difference? Real studies have been done showing the uslessness of these "chips".
