I've seen where they make sticky LED light strips that you can run around the inside edge around the gauges.. They give you the best overall light from what i've heard...

They make bulbs with a bunch of SMD LEDs on all sides but they are kind of expensive. I have done my Jeep 3 times (different colors), my friend's XJ, same friend's MK1 MR2, and another friends MK2 MR2. I use LEDs from christmas lights. They have a flat tip rather than dome so they have a wide lighting angle.

Do these LED's just fit in the factory light sockets or did you have to mod it some how?

All the bulbs i found must be 194s. I ordered the wrong bulbs for the dash, so make sure u get the 194s. www.superbrightleds.com, All i did was replaced the bulb. No converting, or modding. i love how it became a mud machine / love machine

Ive gone all LED on the internal lighting + high Mount Brake light that I added in (They didnt start until 1994 and mine is 1993). Here is a list of item, stock bulb, and LED from SuperbrightLEDs that I used:
Cigarette Lighter 1891, use BA9S (DO NOT use any other one, or it wont fit in the bulb enclosure).
Glove Box 194, use T-10
Kick Panel Courtesy lights 168, use T-10
Dome light & Cargo Dome light Rigid Loop Festoon, use RL4410 ( expect to carve a little plastic out from fixture arms, but they still fit stock bulb after that).
High Mount Stop light from 1994 -1996 922 Use 921
Overhead Console lights 912 Use 912
Transfer Case Indicator bulb 658 Use T10
Vanity Mirror lights 6614F aka TS-14/1VC, use F30WHP-12V
Indicator lights (turn Signal, High Beam) 74, use 74
Instrument Cluster backlighting 194, use 194
Backlights for wiper, heat control, rear defrost, etc 37, Use 74

Ive been very pleased overall with the effect. And they were all drop in replacements, except the cargo dome light. The Cigarette lighter ONLY fits the 120 degree bulb - I tried the other 2 & they are too big.
