I recently replaced my steering gear with a Durango box as well as replaced my pump with a stock one. Both being remans... Everything was great at first but all of a sudden, something seemed to go wrong. The box started groaning and it seems like the steering gear is pushing the steering to the right side. When I let go of the wheel going down a flat, straight road the wheel slowly turns to the right. Alignment was done after the replacement. Also, the steering effort is not even. When turning left, the effort to turn is the same all the way through and the wheel wants to come back center. However, when turning right, the wheel seems like it has to take up slack for a few inches and then the steering effort slowly gets harder through the turn. The wheel does not want to return to center after a right turn.

Also, the steering linkage what been replaced (draglink, tie rod, track bar, TREs).

The only thing I can think of is the fact that the Durango box is larger so the center of the the pitman arm is not in the same position as a stock box. Could it be this simple? Has anyone else had this problem? I have searched multiple forums and cannot find any threads with this subject.

Did u put any spacers when u put it on? I'm having the same problem with the pump. A friend made me a spacer for it.

 

I used a heavy duty spacer between the steering box and the frame rail if that is what you're referring to, as far as any upgrades to the pump though, it is completely stock. What symptoms are you experiencing?

 

Your suppose to put an extra washer in between the spacer and steering box so that it is more aligned.

Durango Steering Box Write-up

 

I used the same mounting plate that is in that write up and used the washers like he did

 

Pump seems to make noise when turns to the drivers side only. After I drive for a lil it doesn't seem as bad as when I first start driving.

 

Maybe there was air in the steering gear?

 

Same, the noise seems to go away after a few minutes of driving

I flushed the system with 2 qts of PS fluid and cycled the steering (with wheels off the ground) 25-30 times... I suppose it could have air stuck in the system, just seems unlikely...

Side note: not trying to sound like these posts aren't helping, I just tried to do as much research and work on the steering before I posted a thread about it. haha

 

Today I looked at my pump everything seems str8 I did take the cap off and cycled the steering with the wheels on the ground( bout 8 times). Then I checked the fluid and was still full. Replaced cap and the noise is gone. Guess I still had air.
