The rusted parts, even if it is not the frame rails, can affect the structural integrity of the uni-body. For instance, the floor pans which usually rust are part of the structure and if rusted badly can allow the body to flex more.

Cutting out my pans and welding in new ones. The new floor pan is from Classic 2 Current and will take some fitting. I may not start welding until Winter is over so I can paint while it is warmer. Not my DD so not a problem.

 

I'm looking into this repair as we speak. Will be doing some tests and will hopefully be figuring out how to repair most of this.

 

This is the passenger side frame rail, it's in decent condition and doesn't need almost any work (except floor pans)





This is below the driver's seat, this will need some work.





This is behind the drivers seat and will probably need the most attention.

As well as those spots, my floor pans are rusted out somewhat so I'm going to address that as well. It seems that the left side is the problem area.

Go back to what 93XJeeper said...with rust, it isn't what you see, it's what you DON'T see. The floor pans are one thing, but that uniframe is gone. It isn't worth the time, effort or money you'll dump into it. It will be more economical to find a donor body and swap the good stuff over.

Oh and I seriously suggest that you take that thing off the road immediately. It is NOT SAFE.

That thing has rotted from the inside out. The spots you see are where it has rusted all the way through, take a screwdriver and give the "good" looking spots a good jab. Bet it'll go clean through it. I know it sucks but that ride is dead.

Holy ****! That's worse than my XJ. Both of my frame rails looked like your "good" one, after brushing the inside out I found there was this left:



THAT is unsafe. The other side is just done. Seriously. Your XJ is done. Do not drive that thing, it is a serious hazard that will injure someone, and you will be responsible.

 

I believe the passenger side is ok but the drivers side needs to be completely rebuilt/reinforced.

Just for clarification because no one seems to know this, I AM NOT DRIVING IT. I don't even have registration or insurance. It's been sitting in my driveway for a couple weeks is all. And I don't plan to drive it until I figure out what to do with that frame rail. I appreciate all the posts but I WILL figure something out. I just bought this Jeep barely a couple weeks ago, I'm not giving up on it.

 

How would we know? You never said that...

I gotta ask you, what did you pay for this thing? And, did you know what was wrong with it when you bought it? And, finally, what kind of fab skills do you have? I know you just bought it (now), but I'm telling you, it isn't worth it, man. I weld/fab for a living...you're gonna need to pull the floor pans out for replacement, I'm assuming, and once you get into the backside of the uniframe rails, you're going to find a **** ton of rust in there.

If you're completely bent on doing it, more power to you, but my advice to you is stop dumping money into it, like brakes and general maintenance, until you know EXACTLY what you have on your plate, and if you have the skills/time/money to repair it.

 

The drivers side frame rail needs to be totally replaced, also floors and rockers. That the door won't close now is a REALLY bad sign. My floor and frame rail are gone and I don't have that issue. Basically your Jeep bent at the roof...

 

Getting it right now is going to be near impossible. Good luck to you OP.

 

Wow, those pics! Even if you try to fix that rust, while your pulling the floor pans up, the jeep would probably fold in half because their is no frame to support it. And your roof ain't gonna do nothin to support it ether,,it's just a big piece of sheet metal.
