It depends on who made it, and the equipment/material they use. 1.75" x .120 DOM is a good all-around size/thickness, and quite commonly used. Talk to your buddy and find out exactly what his capabilities are, and go from there. So, are you building a box-style bumper with a tube stinger, or going all tubing?

It works well...to simulate tube I have used the foam rubber you get at home depot to insulate the pipes on water heaters, it's cheap and gives you a rough idea of what it will look like. Just like anything else, the more prep you put in the better it will be.

Kudos to this guy. Only thing to add; make sure it's functional. Can't express how frustrating a non-functional stinger looks.
