One more thing, if I'm going to 4.56 gears would I need a new carrier? The only ones I'm finding are 2.56 and up so will the stock carrier work with 4.56?

For the 8.25? There is no carrier break on the 8.25 so you am reuse the stock one. That axle is a good route to go for an easy upgrade.

Cool I found one pretty close to me for $225 so I think I'll go pick it up tomorrow or Saturday.

You will be a lot happier with the 8.25 29 spline with it no carrier needed. I just finished my XJ upgraded from 3.55's to 4.56's with Detroit Lockers front and rear. If possible do both at the same time you will save quite a bit on the labor about the same as installing gears if done together usually no extra charge.

I bought a complete gear "Package" from Rustys Off Road it includes gears for the front and rear mine were D30 and Ch 8.25 plus complete master install kits (good ones) for both gear sets all for under $500. Can't remember the exact price now but good quality gears. I was well pleased with the package and the price one of the best on the web delivered in 2 days to me.
