I just did RTV on mine. But when I did the Therm. Housing, I used a FelPro gasket and some RTV. Gaskets are man made. Meaning they won't be perfect. Your not looking to like triple the thickness of the paper gasket. Your just applying a THIN THIN layer to BOTH sides of the gasket. All your trying to do is fill in any imperfections in the gasket along with any issues with the surfaces. In your case the DIFF cover and the Carrier housing.

I like the black with no gasket too. Never had a leak, just Put a bead around the the diff and bolt holes let it set up for only a couple mins, install finger tight, let cure for a couple mins more then torque em down. Make sure everythings super clean first, with no gouges from scrapers and such.

so what your saying is i should lay a bead on the side of the gasket that will mount too the diff cover then place the gasket. rtv side on the diff cover, then lay a bead on the gasket (then do i let dry? or no?) or just mount right too the pumkin n bolt on as tight as my hands can get it then let dry? then fasten in the crisscross pattern?

if I cover a gasket with rtv, I put a big glob on it. rub my fingers over the gasket and rtv (in a motion that looks like show me the money) lol. just a thin layer but completely covered on both sides.

No, don't let dry before tightening in cross cross pattern just wait about a minute after finger tight. U want to get it tightened completely before it dries.

Like this, cover both sides of the gasket, i do this most of the time as it aids in holding the gasket in place as well. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE COVER! this can crush the gasket and cause it to leak. About 20 ft lbs. I use a gasket alot because its way easier to clean off than a gob of oomgucky that just stretches when you try to scrape it.

Another thing, this trick only works on paper gaskets. Never use it on rubber or cork.

I have to respectfully disagree. Letting it cure for an hour before tightening the rest of the way is straight off the Permetex Ultra black instructions for use.

when using the blue rtv we waited an hour n it didnt cure enough n leaked. we re tried it let it cure over night n was fine. so now i got the ultra black rtv and a gasket. from whats been said thus far with the gasket i use les utlra black rtv just enough to seal any gaps now its the wait vs not wait debate.

It appears that if your using it as a gasket dressing you do not wait, but assemble immediately, my mistake. I was going by the instructions for using the RTV as a stand alone gasket, HTH.

Rub the rtv in the gasket. Cover the gasket don't make a bead. You DO NOT LET IT SIT UNINSTALLED! You install it ASAP an then itll set
