Default Diesel Conversions

Just out of curiosity has anyone here done a VW 1.6 Diesel conversion into a Cherokee? I know the TDI 1.9's etc. have been able to go in but I imagine because of the turbo and power they would deliver and maybe the 1.6 is not so much?

Curious I can get my hands on one next to nothing running with 100K miles on it complete with transmission and thought I ask for future project if it would work.

Compared to the 4.0 though I would have to do my #'s crunching on HP/Torque. Even if it were a daily driver be kind of cool to have a Diesel.

Wow what a difference in HP/Torque

Jeep XJ 4.0 Renix version is running 173 HP / 220 LB torque

1.6 Diesel is running 65 HP / 90 LB torque

Think I answered my own question but still be cool build for someone if they wanted to try it I can't think of much I would use that motor for now that I see its capabilities unless it is tunable and buildable to make it produce more power.

If your looking for power the only swap worth it to me is a v8 one mostly a ls.If you keep your foot out of it the mileage shouldn't be no worse then the 4.0 is now.

Power yes but I was thinking if someone wanted to swap the 4.0 out for this and then to go off roading, with that limited power probably not a good idea. If your just daily driving yea I think it would work perfect. There are some things you can do to add more power to this 1.6 diesel but your limited unless you turbo it.

I have to jump in on this because there are some factors not being considered here.

When comparing HP and Torque ratings one must factor RPM's into the mix. What does the 4.0 rate at when only doing 2300 RPM's? From this RPM down is where a diesel stands out in lower end torque performance. Bet they would be fairly close in HP and Torque comparison at this lower RPM.

I can see the best advantage being fuel economy, especially when idling around in low range off road. The better torque output at a lower RPM would create an environment that uses very minimal fuel and feel very little load. A diesel of this size would more than likely burn only about a half gallon or less an hour idling around in low range and do the same work as the 4.0.

Nope.

I'm looking at the new Cummins Repower 2.8 diesel for my Jeep. It has the HP and torque that the 1.6 lacks. And I don't have to adapt it from a FWD configuration to a RWD/4WD Jeep.

There are good diesel swaps and then some that make little sense.

Lol, Good engine, but pretty sure there is no physical way to stuff it into a Cherokee. Let alone the needed radiator area to keep it cool. I seriously eyeballed the one in my Ram side by side to the Jeep once and right away said hell to the no. Didn't even need to waste time to go get a tape measure.

Yeah, if I do it for less than $15K all in, I'll be surprised. Which is why it's a "in a year or two when I save up the money for it" kind of plan.
