Detroit true trac d30
I'm going to be getting detroit for the 8.25 and a true trac for the 30 when I regear. Does the true trac replace the carrier? Or do I still need to get a low ratio carrier with 4.88s. I'm new to this type of stuff so any help is appreciated

I personally love the true trac as soon as I have the money one will be going in my 30. I have a friend who owns a 4x4 shop and he replaces broken lunch box lockers all the time for people who actually wheel their jeeps a lot he said he has also had to replace some ARBs too. I had one in the rear of a 79 ford F100 and it worked flawless

Mine worked like an open diff. In the rear you can use your brakes to trick it into locking up but not in the front. Barely lift a tire or get it in mud or a slick surface and it's one wheel peel.

It's this need to apply the brakes that makes an LSD a less than stellar choice for a 4x4. You'll be much better off with a selectable locker.
I've removed a lot more LSD's than I've installed.
Typical TrueTrac differentials are shown above. As with a conventional differential, the TrueTrac side gears are interconnected by pinion gears, which allow one wheel to slow down or speed up as required.
TrueTrac gears have spiral teeth, and the pinions are mounted in pockets in the case.
If one wheel begins to lose traction, the pinions separate slightly from the side gear, and wedge in the
pockets. As input torque increases, the separating force increases, thus slowing or stopping the
spinout. This allows torque to be distributed to the wheel with the best footing.
Note: TrueTrac differentials require a certain amount of resistance at the ground in order to start
the power transfer. A TrueTrac differential may not transfer power if the spinning wheel is off the
ground. If spinning occurs, often a light application of the brakes, while carefully applying power,
will slow the spinning wheel enough to allow the TrueTrac differential to transfer torque to the
other wheel.

that makes sense if one wheel is off the ground it wont transfer power since there is no load on that wheel. All my experience with them have been in the mud, drag racing and trail riding never on off camber stuff where wheels come off the ground

Thanks for the input guys. I'm looking for a locker that's going to replace the stock carrier. But I didn't really want to spend the extra money on a selectable. Decisions decisions

^ I agree! I've seen people with a LSD just spin tires. I have a lunch box in my front diff. steering gets rough locked in the front, also good to have it open diff in the snow. just all around better for a DD.

I'm just cheap. Kind of. Im ordering chromolys for d30 alloys for 8.25. Lockers(prefer full case)for both. 4.88s. Once I figure out what exactly I want and some decent prices.
