Detours Tailbone System
I like them, If i hadn't already purchased my bumper / tire carrier I'd deffinatly would have bought that. I really like the clean finished look, it's also got the rear recovery points....
$405.00 + shipping & handling isn't bad....
I spent $ 400 +/- and still have to do other work to finish it off. Some tire carriers go all the way up to $ 1,000 + (nutz)

The problem is the popularity of the XJ, you can price it at whatever you want and people will buy it. There is no such thing as cheap aftermarket bumpers etc for the XJ unless you know someone who makes them locally. I wouldn't pay $400 for it because I can mount a tire behind the rear seat baja style or put it on the roof rack. Detours makes great stuff though.
I've had mine installed for about 2 years now. No issues whatsoever. I'm wheeling a little harder now than I was, so I'm getting concerned about corner protection (or lack thereof with the stock bumper skin). My plan is to remove the stock bumper skin, then buy some plate and build my own full bumper skin to mount over the tailbone assembly. As stated above, it's mounted to the frame and is very sturdy, the stock bumper skin is just installed over it to make it look cleaner.
Love the Tailbone. I've had mine for 2 years and it's held up great. I've used the recovery points to pull people out and can tell you it's strong. It's an easy install and well worth the money IMO. My only gripe is I wish the carrier tube itself were slightly longer, but that's me. It holds my 33 just fine so I'm happy.
Brent, I have the same plans for mine - buy a little bit of plate and just build the bumper using the tailbone as the base.

yeah i guess i see the cost as being a reasonable buy. i am a super cheap B****RD who bought a $200 welder to make stuff as opposed to $400 for just one item.
I'm in no way, shape, or form saying that is overly priced. It's a deal! and the craftmanship looks spot on.

Anyways, the tailbone. I like it. However, it doesn't help provide protection for the rear when departing from something. That would be my only concern. x10 if you are in rocks frequently.

I like this bumper a lot. If I was going to get one it would be that tailbone or the slim bumper they make. I just came across a factory tire carrier first.
