I've been welding for years and my dad owns his own machining/fabrication shop. I'm not worried about adding to the tubes, no need to press in new tubes

Why it's no different than shortening an axle? Just cut the cast section out and add the tube back.

Welding to a short piece to the tube if done wrong will weaken the axle housing.Its better and easier to just retube that side of the axle then try that janky stuff.

If my dad was a welder and had a shop i would have a steering 14 bolt front and shorten 14 bolt rear.I wouldn't waste my time with 1/2 ton axles.
