Dana 44 LSD
So I’ve been thinking and want to put LSD’s in my XJ. Since the only off-roading I really do is when I use it for hunting and fishing I don’t feel like I need lockers, I just wan that little bit of extra traction when I get in muddy situations or have to climb up over a log in the the middle of the hunting road. I mean my Jeep ain’t let me down yet but it would just be nice for the extra insurance. So now I’m searching for the LSD’s. I know I can get one for the D30 out of a Volvo but I need some advice on where I can get one for the D44. I’d prefer to pull one out of jy somewhere so if anybody has any advice on what vehicles I can get one out if it would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone has any experience with having or going to LSD’s and would like to chime in that would be great too before I get too far into this.

I would go with the Aussie too.
With a LSD off road the best choice would be a Trutrac.
Any LSD with clutches has a great potential for failure of the clutches. If you get into a situation where one wheel is spinning and the other is stationary, i.e. "stuck" the clutches in a lot of LSD's on the market are taking a beating.
You would be better off being open in that situation, and for the 550.00 a Trutrac costs my next thought would be "but why?".
Lunchbox lockers are noisy for sure, especially the first 500mi of the break in period, and there still a few hundred bucks but..
For the type of driving op described in post #1, I would get a lunchbox.

My Spartan lockers are quiet and they do good on and off road. For what you do a Spartan or other lunchbox locker in the rear is all you really need.

1) A lunch box locker is cheaper and does not require gear setup
2) A LSD will be more expensive and will require gear setup
.

Thanks for the responses. I was leaning towards lunchbox lockers but kind of talked myself out of one. Would a locker in rear with LSD in front be any benefit?

For all of the trouble you'd go through finding a junkyard limited slip, rebuilding it because it's more than likely worn out completely, and installing it, you're probably better off just buying new limited slips. You'll have to set up the carrier shims anyway so that labor isn't any different.
I went with TrueTracs front and rear in my XJ and it's great. It handles really well on road and when I hit the snow, it just digs right through.
While I get the appeal of lunchbox lockers, I've had them in other Jeeps in the past and I really didn't like the compromise of how it ran on the road. For a daily driver that sees some limited traction here and there now and again on dirt roads, I wouldn't hesitate to pick a limited slip over a lunchbox locker myself. Unless I was on a really limited budget. And if I was that limited on a budget, I'd question putting any money into a Jeep at all.

Yeah, OK. You don't need a full locker to get over a log in the trail.

wasn't gonna go there.........but oh well..................and I have yet to experience any of these 'quirks or problems' so many complain of with lunchbox lockers, and I've been running them for close to 20 yrs now in big & small trucks, with low (160 hp) & high (450+ hp) power, and small (29") to large (40") tires, and with street tread to swampers............and 2 different brands ta boot !!
