Default Dana 44 or Ford 8.8 Rear?

Simple question guys. I want to replace my soon to die Dana 35 with a better axle. I've found a couple of 44's on CL for under $200 and some 8.8's for around the same price. When I do the swap I want disc brakes and a locker. What do you think is the better/cheaper setup? Thanks.

Whatever costs less in total price and gas to pick up.

To a very close limit, they'll be very similar in performance.

I personally wouldn't put another c-clip axle in to replace the 35 and I've seen several 8.8s twist tubes. If you go the 8.8 route weld the tubes and if you break a shaft don't drive long relying on the disc to hold the wheel on, it'll bend the backing plates.

Unless it is an XJ D44, the 8.8 will probably be less work to make fit. But it is kind of a toss up. 8.8's are probably easier to find. xjmarc has some points to be considered. Although, you typically have to be wheeling pretty hard for tube twisting ot be an issue. But if you have the resources, better safe than sorry.

8.8 hands down. I swapped mine in a couple months ago, welded the tubes, trussed it,and Lincoln locked it all on stocks shafts. I beat the **** out of it with 35's and a V8. Google it, you will find out really fast which one is stronger.

If you got a pull a part close to you,Go there and grab a 8.8 from a 96 or newer explorer. If you get the superior super 88 kit which removes the c clips and weld up the axle tubes it will out live you.

An 8.8 might cost more, but is stronger.

You're comparing 8.5 to 8.8...

I would do the ford 8.8 with 4.10s and LSD

but I would do a dana44 if it came with a locker :O

Depends on the deal

Always weld your tubes if you're that hardcore

going from scrath... 8.8... duhh

As pointed out all ready.. the 8.8 is a lil bit more work to install, but a stout axle, and is physically stronger then the d44. BUT if you can find a XJ d44 it is a bolt in.. and a very stout axle.

Also as pointed out ALWAYS weld Tubes to center section... UNless you dont know what you are doing.. then pay someone

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'll go with the 8.8/weld the tubes while it's out, and throw some sort of locker in. I found one on CL last nite for 150 and its close to home. Thanks again.

Ranger versions have 28 spline shafts and are weaker than the exploder version.
