Default dana 30 locker

i have been reading alot of mixed things about installing a lunchbox locker in a stock dana 30 front axle(xj 2 piece axle). some say it will make horrible sounds and destroy the axle whereas other say they love the easy upgrade. any comments or advice?

Thanks

I have no Idea where you been reading or who you been talking too. But you got bad info, or miss-understood. As far as noise. If installed correctly, you get a little clicking, when making sharp turns. Otherwise you should not notice it till you shift to 4wd . Damaging axles, this is caused by 80% heavy right foot, 10% poor maintenance, 10% bad instalation. It is a relativly easy upgrade.

I've been running a lockright in my Dana 30 with 35-12.5-15 tires for over a year now. I wheel pretty hard at least twice a month and have not had one issue. I don't even notice it's there unless I am in 4 wheel drive. It was an easy upgrde and I installed it myself in my driveway in about an hour. I am still running stock gears and I have a friend who runs 4.88s that installed one and started breaking shafts. He switched to alloy shafts and has not had any problems since. Just don't go nuts with the skinny pedal and you will be just fine.

Hi guys I have just joined the Forum and just bought a jeep. I have always run Nissan Patrols (Not availible in the US) and the diffs are bomb proof Tis is My main fear with the Cherokee, How strong are the Dana 30s. One of my mates runs a Wrangler with long arm and 35 claws He broke the 30 every time he when out, He was running an ARB locker, Do you guys have lots of issues with the stock 30s or is it made worse by the locker. Cheers Leon

Outkast, I just looked at your specs, How much rubbing do your 36s do with the 4.5 lift and have you had any breakages with running the big rubber. Ive always run 36s and ran 37 boggers on my Nissan. I have only just got this jeep and want to run 35s any advice welcome.
Cheers Leon

They speak the truth. My front Aussie Locker doesn't even let me know it's there until I hit the trail. I have broken one passenger side axle shaft since installing the locker but, it was totally my own fault. I was trying to climb a near verticle rock face (Expressway Trail, Walker Valley) with my front wheels turned hard over to driver's side. Then had to bump it a bit to get the front wheels up the ledge. Perfect recipe for a front broken axle shaft and sure as I'm sitting here, it happened...LOL. I did upgrade to newer front axle shafts from a 95 XJ that had ABS...which means you get the bigger knuckle U-joints. I still run stockers, though. No Chromo axle shafts here and I haven't broken another since.

Hell yes it is. Last guy chipped a tooth or something on it and part of it is brand new! $100 part. And it already has a new spring kit! Now I just have to decide which jeep to put it in!

I ran 35x15.50x15 tsl sxs with a lockright and stock shafts and it held together fairly well but it was just a toy never saw any daily driving
