Alright first time using Cherokee forum.I have a 2001 XJ with the LP 30 up front Im planning on 4.10s and truetracs front and rear but id rather have the HP for more clearance and strength but im having a hard time believe it or not finding a 96 and newer axle with the larger u joints. My main question is i can find older than 96 everywhere but will my shafts out of my LP fit in lets say a 94 HP housing and keep my bigger U joints? please help!

Yes you can swap the shafts out no problem. Or a 92-96 with abs will also have the larger joints.Originally Posted by jeepscab

it's actually 95+ that all have the larger ujoints. so that broadens your spectrum a bit
good call on the HP swap. can't hurt. but I always say go with 4.56 or 4.88 :whistling:
if you really want 4.10 they should be found in a 4cyl xj

thats funny cause ive been debating for a long time to either go 4.10 or 4.56. But i think im a keep it on 32"s its whole life and its the stick shift with alot of motor work so i think 4.10 should be a good choice. I do tow a trailer with it every now and then though but its my daily also...

I also have a 01 with a LP I am currently rebuilding a HP from a 97 and will be using my 01 shafts and getting 4.56 gears. I will keep the 97 shafts for spares.

Might need to change exhaust pipe from motor older xjs were formed different to allow for suspension travel also shafts and track bar might be different from hp to lp do some research to avoid clearance and alignment issue.

On a ZJ you need at least 3" of lift for exhaust clearance for a HP swap. Not sure on an XJ but the exhaust is different on later models.
Trackbars are the same. With a couple inches of lift, bumpstopped, HP will have no clearance issues with the stock California Emissions exhaust.
As for gears, 4.10:1 on 32s WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION is an excellent choice. Deeper than stock final ratio so you can tow well but not so deep that you come off of every red light in 3rd gear lol.
In an automatic you'd want 4.56:1.

Looked at my HP again. Its not a 97, has the small joints?? My 01 has larger joints.....hmmOriginally Posted by 94XjSport94

Definitely 4.56 with 32's.
I have also found that a lot of axles have already had shafts swapped around. As long as its a non disco axle you're good. Just swap in the 760x shafts if need be.

If you can get the numbers stamped into the axle shaft on the passenger side facing towards the front I can actually tell you what year the axle was made and what it came out of and what gear ratio it originally had.Originally Posted by MichiganCherokee

Dana has a PDF file of everything they made for the last 50 years.
I found it when I was trying to identify an axle I purchased. I was told it was from a 99. After I got it I got suspicious and found it was made in 1985. Fortunately the carrier and ring and pinion are in great shape so I'm swapping them into a 99 axle I DO know.

Awesome yeah I'll do that. Kid I got them from (HP D30 and 8.25) said they were from a 97Originally Posted by Jamie57
