I have read where you can swap a D44 front axle to the Cherokee that have locking hubs.
What vehicles should I pull one from when out in the salvage yard?
Any width or other differences I should be aware of?
Thank you

You do know that there is a lot of work involved with that swap I guess, you must be building an off-road rock crawler.
With that said you can use a lot of different D44's because of all the cutting involved on the differentials to make them fit unless your doing a full width install.
Have you considered a beefed-up HPD30 to start with, just a thought.

and bronco right? whichever years of those that do not have the case wedges are my favorite D44's (76-77?). 5 lug and 65" wide. great when paired with a full width 8.8 rear
OP, lockout hubs should definitely NOT be the reason you want to swap in a 44 lol. you can do a lockout conversion kit on a D30 if you really want lockouts... they're not really that special to have. and pretty big waste of cash if you asked me
but still way cheaper than a D44 buildup

I am going 33"
The way I wheel, I could most likely get by with my current d35/30 setup.
I creep.

The 1980 and newer jeep wagoneer will work but its a 6 lug and takes some welding before it bolts in.But for the money and time i would beef up what you go if you break the dana 30 then look in a full width dana 60.Or if you don't want full width the jeep jk rubicon dana 44s are between stock width and full width and stronger then a normal dana 44.

Think you will find the HPD30 and a Chy. 8.25 will work out very well for you they are very close in strength to a D44 and a direct bolt-in.
I run the same thing with 33x12:50x15's and 4.56 gears and Detroit Lockers front and rear. No issues yet (2 yrs.) and have no plans on changing till something breaks.

Take it from someone running a front D44, if you are breaking a D30 to the point you need to swap in something beefier a D44 ain't it. Mine was pretty much free otherwise I'd be running a D60 and at some point will. I'm running chromos and still break shafts and the u joints are the same as a newer D30. I've killed a lockright and a spartan as well. D30s will hold 35s if you are smart and a D44 maxes out with 37s so there isn't that much of a gain.
