D35C to Chrysler 8.25 switch
I am researching, so please don't start with "use the search button". All the threads and topics i've found so far have been on lifted XJs or a NP231 transfer case.
Specifically, I have a stock height, 99 Cherokee, with a NP242 (select trac) transfer case. And an open D35 rear. While looking around, I found a used 8.25 rear (29 spline) with a limited slip. I want to buy it, but need to know if it will fit first.
my concern is the length of the rear driveshaft. Since the 8.25 snout is longer, and the 242 is longer, can i use my existing driveshaft? or use the one from the donor vehicle? Or will this not work at all? (both have drum brakes by the way)
thanks everyone.

The axle will be an almost direct swap. You'll need new U bolts & plates for an 8.25!
Driveshaft I'm not sure about as I haven't slid my 8.25 under my XJ yet & am running a Tatton DS. I think you'll have to get a shaft off of a diner, but not 100% sure.

The snout is 1" longer. Does your slip joint have an extra inch of movement available? You can unbolt the u-joint to check this if it isn't obvious.
You should have a local driveshaft shop that can shorten your drive shaft if needed.

The NP231 and NP243 are, as far as drive shafts are concerned, the same length, and have the same output. Drive shaft length is determined by the transmission & axle combination. If you are not lifting several inches to make up for the additional length, you WILL need the drive shaft from a donor with your target axle & transmission. Or as mentioned have it shortened.

Hi. I have the same rear on my 99, and I was considering the swap to the 8.25. What amount of lift are you talking about that will make-up the difference? I am going 3.5", most likely a RE kit.
Thanks.
Thanks.
