Default Cutting shift rod sye

I am about to do a SYE on my 1997 jeep Cherokee and I was wondering if I have to cut the shifter rod or is that just for older model T cases. Thanks for any help!

I'm not sure, I had to cut the shaft on my 90. I'd suggest you be prepared to cut it if needed, and just jump in there. This video by bleepinjeep helped me when I did mine:

I didn't have to cut mine on a '96 XJ, NP 231 case.

You dont have to cut the shift shaft on np231 or np242's. I've done both
