I'm looking at buying myself another xj but the one I'm looking at has cut fenders which I have no problem with less work I gotta do but he cut the spot welds out completely on the rear fenders I was just wondering how big of an issue this poses cuz I've heard a lot of things saying DO NOT cut them out just curious if it's something to look out for or if it's not a problem
No seriously, you need to fix that crap. At the very least the interior with get wet every time it rains. The most that can happen is it WILL fold in time.
I bought one just like yours but mine came with a exo cage so I really don't care. It will get fixed. ..... One day.
Depends entirely on how it's done. Did he just cut past them or did he cut the section out and weld in new steel? My 92 XJ the rears are cut well past the pinch welds, but I cut out the wheel wells and redid them entirely.
Then it depends entirely on your ability to weld sheet metal because if he did that in the rear then he cuts the welds out completely and there's nothing holding the inner and outer together unless he welded in new sheet metal.
I cut mine like that. It gives you a lot more room in the rear.
I did this to install my notch customs flares. Check out the notch customs instructions for the exact process. Basically I ended up rewelding the inner fender to the body, cutting the excess metal off and filling the gaps with body filler. I would recommend avoiding buying a jeep in that state. If this guy cut the corner when it comes to the assembly of the body, I would be worried about the rest of the work done on it.
Re-welding the fenders was a giant PITA but I wanted my rear fenders to be right.
