Default Current Consensus on XJ Motor Mounts

My ‘91 needs ‘em.

What’s the latest opinion on the best mounts currently available?

Cheers!

My vote is for Rustys. Locked my engine in place with little increase in vibration at a great price.

I have Brown Dog poly mounts. They have been great so far. With poly, you'll get an increase in NVH but it's a trade off for a stiffer, more durable mount.

I can't contribute the motor mounts to all my NVH problems because my exhaust dumps under the Jeep.

I will be going Ironman 4x4 Fab XJ and transmission mounts soon. Package deal. USA made. Steel is lifetime warranty. Love their quality and engineering.

My vote goes for Brown Dog Engine Mounts, www.browndogindustries.com This company gives you the option of;
- standard height.
- 1 inch lift height.
- rubber isolators.
- poly isolators.
- super mounts.

FYI, if your engine mounts are sagging / ripped, when you replace the engine mounts, you might also want to replace the transmission mount.

Eh. I ran some Rustys for a while and figured the rubber bushing would break in and make less vibes. A few months and 5000 miles later and it was just annoying so I went back to OEM mounts. Not OEM style mounts but actual OEM Chrysler mounts from the dealer. It cost a good bit more but oh well, the originals lasted 190,000 miles.

Pretty much mandatory doing motor and trans mounta at the same time. If not all your really doing is asking for trouble

I decided to go with Brown Dog, stock height, rubber bushing. Both sides done by removing bracket and mount as a unit, replacing mount on bracket out of the vehicle, drivers side first.

All the above choices are garbage.Oem mounts are made by Mopar and last 15-20 years. Brown Dog rubber mounts have a harder rubber and vibes are noticeable.

How wide is the brown dog bushings. I clearanced the motor side to fit a 3" bushing.. it looks like they are narrower with a spacer.

So just because you don't like it makes it garbage

They didn't hold a supercharged 4.0L very well.

Measuring with a tape measure, not a caliper, both are just about 3.25" overall width. They both fit the stock brackets on my '91 snug. The steel sleeve on the driver side is cut more narrow than the passenger. This can be seen most clearly from the "back" of the mount. Apparently the stock driver side bracket requires this (see my previous photo, above). In the photos: driver side left, passenger side right.

IMO, the Ironman, Rusty's and Brown Dog are all essentially the same design. I imagine they would all perform similarly given the same bushing material. I do notice more vibes, though not extreme. More noticeable at idle and barely noticeable at speed. I used the Brown Dog recommended method of snugging the through-bolts to the washers.

Time will tell if the slightly increased vibes will be an issue, but so far it doesn't bother me. I ride motorcycles and I actually prefer to hear and feel the motor running somewhat, so at this point I actually prefer the result.
