but that's beside the point... your average DIY'r doesnt have the patients or the "feel" to do a good gear job or diff rebuild. and ive had to fix plenty of screw ups from people who thought they could do it.

In most cases a 20 ton shop press is used to press new bearings on the pinion and carrier. Sometimes a case spreader is needed to help get the carrier out of the housing. I've done a few diffs when I worked at dealerships, the hardest part was getting the shimming right and pressing the bearings on and off a bunch of times. It really is a time consuming job to get it done correctly without it making noise when you're done. Ian on Exreme 4X4 makes it look so easy, but it's not as easy as it seems, especially for a novice.

Jump on those prices. I was quoted at $1500 for labor to do both here, $2700-3000 for parts and labor. I walked away and bought an 8.8 and another pregeared D30 both for less than $1000.
