Wow, I see my thread blew up in my absence, lol!

I'm figuring that this is the exact alt for this swap:

Yes, no, maybe?

No worries as I see he got himself a 7 day vacation!!

Anyway, there are 2 alternators made for the 02 Durango, one for the 4.7:
http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...ntent=19850389

& the other for the 5.9:
http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...archTerm=12329

The part numbers at advance auto are 12328 for the 4.7 & 12329 for the 5.9

I have seen write-ups for both so which would be the easier of the 2 to fit into my 98 4.0L??

You want the 5.9 just gotta pull the bracket grind it til the alt fits with about 1/8" clearance then reinstall bracelet then alt. Done. you can bolt the next one right up after you kill it.

Lmfao!!! Thanks for the straight up answer!

Do I have to do anything to the plug/wiring on the back of it? (for the regulator/ground)?

I already have 1 awg welding cable with an inline 150 amp circuit breaker ready to go in along with a brand new Yellow Top!!

I didnt really get alot of help when I asked the question, but after a few hrs of googling I figured it out. Might as well pass the info along. Only required if the connector on the new alternator is different than your stock XJ.

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f67/du...ulator-182575/

Basically, my 98 XJ has an eyelet-style connector vs, the molded plastic plug-in connector on the newer XJs. The Alternator I got had the newer style plug (2000 Durango) I ended up pulling the back covers off both alternators, and swapping them over (look at the pic I posted on the first page).

4 or 5 bolts for the rear cover, and 4 screws to remove the brush-holder and connector assembly. Swap the old connector over and use the new brushes (after cleaning it up of course). The stock XJ cover wont fit though, and you will end up needing to cut the cover a little bit.

You can swap out the brushes in the same method for reference, if you end up needing to rebuild it later down the road or clean it out (easy to sand/buff the crud off the copper shaft, and install new brushes).

Post if you end up needing help with this, the mod was still pretty fresh in my mind.

This one looks correct, but it has a newer style connector than my 98 XJ;

Obviously you will want to clearance the bracket and bolt up the alternator before modifying the cover because it will void the warranty. The better option is to get a cover from the junkyard to modify (the pre 99' durango cover will also bolt right up, without any modifications), but you seem averse to junkyards
