Hey guys I have a 98 jeep cherokee 4.0 that has a lifter going out, so I figured I would freshen up the valve train and do a Comp cam PN 68-501-5, their timing chain PN 3219, and valve springs PN 983J-KIT. But now I'm hearing that the valve springs that everyone advertises as fitting 1988-2006 4.0L actually don't! Does anyone know what head they do fit?
thanks in advance

They dont fit. They are way too big in diameter. I typically use GM valve springs from the LS6 engine but some machine work is still required. You got to open up the head where the spring sits (most machines shops can take care of it easily). If I remember right, only about .020". They have very similar spring rates to the Comps.

Nope, those are too big in diameter as well. The LS springs I used are 1.27" in diameter. I believe (dont quote me on this) a stock 4.0L spring is 1.25" diameter.

I have used those mopar performance springs on both of my strokers with no issues....you have to change the retainers and locks but the springs fit on the head seats no problem
the issue is I don't think you. Can get them anymore

What head? Wondering if there is a good sized difference in the spring bases depending on casting number. Last one I did with different springs was a 98.

Also, I don't see how the Mopar ones he listed would work as the specs say they are nearly 1/4" bigger in diameter. wrong part number maybe?

I got the part numbers off this thread while searching for springs.

After looking at the pictures in that thread, I was wrong with what I posted. The LS springs were too small on the ID and thats what I had machined. So it looks like @bluejeep2001 is right and they should fit, as long as the top hat still fits snug in the ID of the spring.

I think I still have my set of Comp springs laying around. If I can find them, I will see if I can figure out exactly why they didnt work for me.

Remember, you cant use stock retainers and locks, you have to use the ones listed that match those new springs
