Default cold air intakes

Ive been looking into buying a cold air intake for my jeep and had a few questions i thought some of you might have good answers too:
is there any other parts i should consider upgrading if i do install a intake?
what brands would you recomend?
does a cold air intake truly increase horsepower and torque like i have heard?
are they really worth the price?
do cold air intakes improve milage at all?
thanks

The best "cold air" intakes are the factory installed intakes and snorkels. The only reason you would use something like a K&N filter system is to look cool and never have to replace the filter again. Good luck

Bingo. Car companies spend ALOT of $ on the design of cars and what you have now does its job

I wouldn't say they are worthless because company's like k&n spend lots of money designing an intake system that will improve hp and torque. But the fact is it will not give u v8 power and will not give you Prius fuel efficiency. The choice is up to you whether you want to put one on your ride. In my experience I just put a cai on my 2000 Toyota echo and seen a 2-3 mpg increase and it seems not to struggle going up long hills like we have here in southwestern va so in my opinion they are not worthless and is very much not a waste of money

Ive loved the cai's I've installed. I could hear and feel some difference. Don't expect a lot but it's there.

If you plan on actually doing a cold air go ahead and plan on getting a new throttle body as well. It'll choke off any increased airflow if it's stock. They do work but only a little. After that I suggest you build your own. It's really just some tubes and a filter. It's much cheaper to do it this way. After that make sure it can breath and try to insulate it from the heat of the engine.

would you still do this with cowl air induction? you did say any increased air flow so I'm assuming yes..

if you make your own what do u do with the hose that runs from the valve voer to the airbox and the one on the other side? do they need to be hooked up?

Intakes are designed just like anything else on cars with middle ground in mind. Function, comfort or quite in this case and performance. Therefore you will get something from the upgraded intake ive always seen some kind of increase in mpg and a feel a little boost in hp mostly in upper rpm like going up hill or passing on the highway. Ive yet to put a cai on anything and it not gain something on the dyno, usually small but over entire curve.

Make sure its a real cold air though, iff it gets air from engine bay its junk and actually cost you power when you get the engine warm.

Honestly the last time I did something along these lines we scrounged a pick and pull for parts that would fit. And yes, the main thing is that the stock throttle body just chokes it off. The intake itself does this as well. You'll get 2-3 horsepower by just modifying the filter box for better flow (remove the restricter for example), and boring out the throttle body.

I've seen a few things done with these. The one on the other side, I believe it eventually leads to the charcoal canister, can then be rigged up to the new tube. As for the vent, that's really up to you. You can find mini filters that go directly onto the vent, or rig it up to the cold air. It's easy enough to attach connection points with a little metal set and a drill.
