Third vote for the cowl intake. You have two options: Spectre and THOR. Each has pros and cons. I have the Spectre and love it now that I was able to reduce the whistle.

The intakes that take air from under the hood are sucking hot air. The only way to get cold air is to use a cowl intake or a snorkel.

How'd you go about reducing the whistle?

I agree with the cowl but make it yourself, no reason to pay 100 bucks for 20 dollars worth of material from the hardware store. Took me maybe 45 minutes to make. I made mine similar to the spectre one that runs over the valve cover to the passenger side cowl.

Here is one example https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f67/di...intake-179449/

Lots of grinding. You use a 3" hole saw to cut a round hole in the firewall, but the actual intake sleeve is cut at an angle so that the hole is oblong. The oblong intake over the round hole in the firewall creates little pockets of air that resonate. I ground out the hole in the firewall to make it oblong to match the intake sleeve. I also ground the inner edges of that sleeve to further smooth it out.

The whistle is not gone completely, but it's not as annoying as it was. Once it warms up and the sucking sound fades, you just get lots of glorious intake growl.

A little search will also revel DIY intakes that use stock air box. Some may not be the prettiest, but work.

Default DIY Cowl Intake

This is the only picture I have at the moment, but I went ahead and just made my own cowl intake. Pretty easy, just takes some time for cutting and grinding. I think I have about $70 or so into it. Seems much quieter than what I saw in YouTube videos of the Spectre cowl intake, so I'm happy about that.

Diy cowl intake. I picked up some silicone elbows from ebay and some aluminum tubing from a local shop. With a filter a couple silicone elbows and tubing the total was less than $50

That is the nice part about the Cowl Intake you can buy them or build them. I have saw beautiful jobs of installing the kits and Home fabricated ones along with lousy jobs on both also.

IMHO the best way for a cold air intake/snorkel because if you get water over the top of the hood you have a lot more issues than the intake.

In my view, Build-It-Yourself is superior to commercial purchase. I detailed my approach (borrowing liberally from many others on this list) in the following thread:

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f67/co...veness-165025/

Now after many miles, I can report no whine, whistle or disagreeable noises. No water issues after heavy drenching rains (experimentally established by checking air cleaner and connecting tubing for any signs of water - liquid or thin film). And best of all, my UltraGauge reads out intake manifold temperature as well as engine temperature. Today (typical for the season) the engine temperature was 204F and the intake manifold temperature was 82F during a pull up the grade to Lake Tahoe. The ambient temperature was 62F. When sitting for a long idle, the intake manifold air temp will climb by 50 to 70 degrees. As soon as one is moving it drops to within 20 degrees or so of the ambient air temperature. Can't ask for anything more out of a Cold Air Intake (I'm my opinion)!

Go for a snorkel either bought or there are many who have threads on DIY.
It's the only true cold air intake, it boosts MPG, and you don't have to worry about water over the hood.
Mine is an ARB Safarfi Snorkel.

Not true. The cowl intake is also a true cold air intake. It takes cold high-pressure air from outside the engine bay where it backs up against the windshield.

It doesn't help you with ridiculously high water crossings, but on the flip side it breathes easier because there's a lot less pipe and fewer bends for the air to get through between the opening and the throttle body.

True about traveling thru a pipe but the air traveling only a few inches above an engine known for getting ridiculously hot is warmer than air flowing 2 feet up.
