ive never ridden a jeep with coil-overs...but seeing as my project is a DD and trail rig...i was wondering what coil-overs are like? are they suitable for road driving? if so how is the ride compared to the normal coil spring and strut setup?
what are the real benefits/negatives from a coil-over system compared to a coil spring/strut setup?

I have had many DD with coil over set up on them...there road manners are completely dependant on how you set up your springs(rate and preload/ or multy spring set ups) just keep in mind, the expense can get out of control quick(springs/valving..ect) and either way...as a DD you are going to have to sacrifice a little if its going to be a DD(DD spring rates and valving will not crawl well..for exp.) and high speed valving and sprig rates for bashing the desert dont like the highway much. IMHO..if its a DD save your money and spend on good springs and shocks for the OEM set up.

well its a full size on 40's...bit i want to be abe to keep it as a DD for the occation as well, and especially to get to trails, which some are 5 hours away....so im weighing out my options for axle mounts as to what i will be using, and im wanting it to be still drivable on the road, comfort is less in mind, but i do want driveability...ive driven rigs before that just drive like **** on the road, more like a boat, lol

well, more info always helps. full size on 40"s..nice. coil over no prob, easy to fit too. just spring it for where it will spend 90% of the time..you can deal with the other 10. Add some sway bars for the street to help "eliviate" the boat feeling.most of all...have fun doing it!

wish i could help you on this part...all my co exp is on race trucks and buggies(desert ie= score BITD) rates for crawling im a sure are a ton different.
this might help? but its set up for a "A" arm set up. maybe give them a call, or search through some buld threads here on people that have them.
here is one of the many calculators out there...btw..they make good springs.
http://www.hypercoils.com/spring-rate-calculator/
be aware when you buy your c/o..non of the major manfuctures of c/o shocks have the same dimensions...in other words a 14" fox may be 10" shorter than a 14" king...depending on the shaaft diameter, and the type of ends that they have. measure the room you have to mount, then look at the manufacturer specs on lengths, both extended and colapssed.
for a DD Look into dual rate springs(2 springs per shock)
