Clunking noise when I shift into drive? What’s the problem?
Whenever I put my gear selector into drive or reverse, a loud clunking noise will come from my transfer case. All of the rear u joints are completely fine. Do I need a new transmission mount? I’ve got the 231-J transfer case to the AW4 tranny. Just wanting to know if this is a common problem and what I can do to fix it.

Get under the jeep and jiggle things. Use a flashlight to inspect the mounts real good. Jiggle the driveshafts left and right - watch for movement. Listen for the clunk. Have someone shift the jeep (with engine running) while you lay under it and listen/watch.
Me, I wouldn't sweat it. It's an old jeep. They make noises.
