A 3 foot length of garden hose, can work well for a stethoscope.
Just be really careful not to get it caught in any spinning belts or pulleys.
Sometimes an exhaust leak will quiet down after the metal heats up.
You can use the hose to listen inside the oil fill cap, to rule out any lifter noise. Listen to it while cold & then while hot.
