check the cam position sensor, i have the same thing, the rotating assembly is making contact with the pickup inside the sensor. its on the passenger side right above the oil filter.

I recently dealt with a similar issue. I tracked the clicking noise down to the front/passenger side. I finanlly figured it was the AC clutch bearing. Replaced the bearing and no more issues.

How do you change the clutch bearing and where is it located?

The AC clutch is the pulley on the front of the AC unit (where the belt goes). You will need to pull the clutch assembly off the unit. The clutch costs about 300 bucks to replace. So I changed the bearing in mine. Cost 40 bucks for the bearing. Once you remove the clutch then remove the bearing from the center. Take it with you to the parts store so they order the right one.

It is not overly hard if you have the right tools.

The only thing that is above the oil filter is the oil pressure sensor

My ZJ makes a noise like that . It's the purge solenoid which is part of the evaporate emission control system. It's located on the driver's side fenderwell on mine. It has one vacumn line going to the TB and another going to the vapor canister. As far as I know it's doing what it's supposed to since the OBD isn't showing any fault codes.

What brand of oil filter are you using?

Did this noise start after the last oil change?

Its lifter tick more then likely... Listen and see if it sounds like its coming from the valve cover, if so thats probably your problem. Every jeep gets it eventually, usually doesnt take long. Mine ticked at 100,000 miles and my buddys TJ ticks at 60,000. Jeep engines are noisy, I'd just learn to deal with it if i were you

Mine was making a similar noise from the same area, i could put my hand on the distributer cap and could feel the ticking at the same rate as the sound. It turned out to be the distributer cap rotor, $7 part and was easy to change but now it's doing it again so it might be my actual distributer.

Ditto on the evap purge solenoid. Sounds just like a lifter tick. Especially once they get older. Mine is a 2k but I think 97+ have them maybe even years before. Its on the left hand side. Little black thing with a hose and a connector (maybe I will grap a picture if I remember). Put you hand on it and see if it correlates with the tick
