Default Cleaning up my axles

I'm going to lift my xj 3" as soon as the weather warms up and I want to clean up my axles while I'm at it because they will be disconnected from the unibody anyway. They have a decent amount of surface rust on them but that's average for a 13 year old vehicle in buffalo. So I'm thinking about sand blasting them clean and painting them black, but I don't know what the best way to protect them from rust is. Should I just undercoat them or paint them or even use bedliner? I want them to look clean under my lift and also be protected from salt and corrosion.
