Unhappy Citizens Band

I have a Cobra 19 DXIV
a Firestik II, 4ft Antenna
and a 3 inch heavy duty spring
18ft COAX K-8 Which is the NGP - No Ground Plane
and the Firestik Antenna Mount.

I have the CB grounded and powered straight to the battery.
Sanded where my antenna mount is, not getting too high of SWR Readings, but for right below 2.0 on 1-30ish and right on 2.0 for 40.

I can not hear anyone, i could at one point and time like 2 sentences..., and i see people xmitting, just cant hear them.

I need help

Did you try to key it up without the antenna hooked to it or with high SWR's? If so possibly.

I'll try this, and yeah maybe possibly someone held the button down with no antenna , but I was able to hear for about 5 seconds one day and then nothing, then for 2 seconds the next day, since then , nothing.

thats still pretty high. is it a fiberglass antenna? im sitting on 1.1 SWR with a radioshack $20 antenna. where is the plastic washer for the antenna mount? you want that plastic washer to be inbetween the antenna and the mount. you want no contact with the base of the antenna and the mount, because then whatever you are trying to TX, just gets sucked into the vehicle ground.
