ford 5.0 has been done, detroit 6.2L diesel has been done, cummins 4BT has been done, gotta search around. I am sure you could fit a 327 in one if you tried hard enough.

older Chevy V8s are over rated. they don't produce enough power to make it worth swapping in. a I6 stroker would be a more realistic choice. a new Chevy swap that is popular is the LSx motors but they are difficult and expensive

or the cheaper LT1 (cast iron 350 in pickups) personally i would look at an LH8, LY5, LH6, etc all of the new "327s"Originally Posted by POLAR_JEEP_04

LT1s are still a crappy motor to put that much effort into. if you must have a V8 i would do a LS1, LS2, or LQ4.

It all depends on what you want. The chevy lm7 5.3 can be had at junk yards for almost nothing the issues is the wiring and the dash cluster as the Cherokee cluster will not work. With out the factory computer on the newer models.

For a lot less money you could build your 4.0. If you are really wanting a V8 then check out Novak Conversions. They have a whole write up on putting a LS1 into a XJ. This link might work. novak-adpt.com/knowledge/xj_swap.htm.
