Take it some where and get it scanned. I know some of the auto parts stores around here do it for nothing. If you have a 96 in your profile you can try the key on and off trick and right down the code form the check engine light.

You need to get the code pulled, it could be something random like an O2 sensor warning, or TPS warning, etc.
I would highly recommend buying a cheap OBDII scanner and keeping it in your glove box. Saves me so much time and worrying by being able to pull over and pull the code in 1 or 2 minutes, vs. continuing to drive without knowing what the actual fault is.

I picked up this one a while ago -
It comes from China, so it takes a while to get, but it works well and comes with a booklet that tells you what most of the codes mean so you can affect a trail fix in areas with internet signal.
It also gives you the option to clear the codes if you know what it is/know it doesn't matter, etc.
Now, what I really need is an airbag code reader that can clear the airbag light that has been on since I messed around under the dash the first time!

Take it to Advance, Autozone or O'Reilly and ask them to read the code for you. They do it for free. If you go when they're not busy, the whole thing takes less than 5 minutes.
Write down the code they give you and post it here. Again, write it down, because it's just a set of letters and numbers that are easy to forget. They may also look up the description for you in their computer, so you can write that down also, but the code itself is what's important.
Once you post the code, someone here will probably be able to tell you what it means.
